It's back to the Outer Banks of North Carolina for the
2010 Amateur Radio Lighthouse Society convention! This
is a lighthouse lover's paradise, boasting of five of
the most famous towers in the world! There's Cape
Hatteras (ARLHS USA 119), Currituck Beach (ARLHS USA
212), Bodie Island (ARLHS USA 067), Ocracoke (ARLHS USA
561) and Cape Lookout (ARLHS USA 126).
You'll also have
access to the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
(Reproduction) (ARLHS USA 1032 Hist), located in Manteo, just across
the sound from the Nags
Head/Kill Devil Hills area, and the Roanoke River
Lighthouse (Reproduction)) (ARLHS USA 695 Hist), in nearby Plymouth,
North Carolina. Those driving to the Outer Banks from the
south and west will pass through Plymouth. Nowhere else in
the world will you find this
many world class
lighthouses within easy driving distance.
The Comfort Inn on the Ocean (formerly known as Clarion Inn), will again
serve as headquarters hotel for the annual ARLHS
get-together. It's a nice hotel with very reasonable
rates and great facilities. Our Saturday morning meeting
will take place in the Comfort Inn ballroom and will
feature first rate lighthouse-related presentations and
a business session.
When you're on your way to activate the Cape Hatteras light, you'll want
to at least slow down as you pass through Rodanthe
(ro-DAN-the), where the movie, "Nights in Rodanthe," was
filmed. Make particular note of the multi-story house
that was the "centerpiece" of the movie. A section
devoted to the movie can be found elsewhere on this
website.
Activities will include eating as a group Friday and Saturday evenings at
two of the top restaurants in the Outer Banks area, plus
the opportunity to activate some (or all) of the above
lighthouses. So, have your portable or mobile rig ready
to go and the antenna tuned - they'll get a real workout
in the Outer Banks!
